Race Technology SpeedBox - Speed Sensor

The SPEEDBOX is a very high accuracy non-contact speed sensor that has been designed for professional automotive testing as well as other industrial and high-end motorsport applications. It outputs a low latency, non-interpolated speed measurement comprised of GPS and inertial data combined using an adaptive filter for exceptional performance even in non-GPS ideal environments. Packaged in a high quality machined aluminium enclosure, it offers an extremely high reliability design based on our years of racing experience. The high accuracy speed measurement is output in a variety of forms suitable for integration into most datalogging and display systems; CAN, RS232, analogue and a fully configurable digital pulse output are all provided as standard.

The SPEEDBOX uses Race Technology's very own high accuracy 20Hz PurePhase GPS solution, optimised for speed measurement, which outperforms even top of the range 'survey-grade' GPS receivers in this respect. This unique GPS technology outperforms "GPS-only sensors", offering lower noise, lower latency and superior bandwidth, and is far more resistant to drop outs. It offers an ideal replacement/upgrade for 5th wheel, optical and gps-only sensors in a wide variety of automotive testing applications, including brake testing, chassis dynamics, accident reconstruction, tyre testing and stability management testing, to name but a few.

The SPEEDBOX avoids the inaccuracies, wear and calibration requirements of devices such as wheel speed sensors, requiring only a good view of the sky to give speed output typically 40 times more accurately than a calibrated wheel speed sensor.

SPEEDBOX Versions

The SPEEDBOX is available with a number of options, namely RTK, IMU, and the new INS system. The RTK uses 2 GPS receivers as a "digital compass" to measure yaw and body slip angle. The IMU option is a very high precision inertial sensor used to measure accelerations and roll/pitch/yaw rates. The RTK and IMU options can be used on the same unit. Finally the SPEEDBOX INS options (2 models are available - dual antenna and single antenna) are our flagship products, they use precision roof mounting sensor assemblies that combine the GPS and inertial measurements to produce very high accuracy measurements of speed, position and roll/pitch/yaw all at 200Hz.

A summary of the functionality of each option is shown in the table below:

SPEEDBOX MINI: Is suitable for most straight line testing: pedal triggered brake tests, measuring deviation from a line under braking, acceleration timings, general high accuracy accel/speed measurement for tyre testing etc and also for some special applications like gradient measurement.

SPEEDBOX: As above, but where the application requires analogue inputs/outputs, or a second serial port is required.

SPEEDBOX + IMU: This uses higher grade accelerometers for improved speed and acceleration measurement accuracy, and has the addition of roll/pitch/yaw rate outputs from the built in gyros.

SPEEDBOX + RTK: This adds slip angle measurement to the standard SPEEDBOX. Roll and pitch measurements are also possible but with limited accuracy

SPEEDBOX INS - Single Antenna: Very high accuracy, full vehicle attitude measurement for all types of brake testing and dynamic chassis development. Also much greater robustness to poor GPS data conditions and test accuracy estimates.

SPEEDBOX INS -  Dual Antenna: This adds the ability to initialise when stationary to the SPEEDBOX, ideal for applications where the size and weight penalty of the dual antenna is not a concern but the vehicle can not easily be moved to get the system initialised, such as on mining trucks or other large vehicles.
